How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Made
A plain-language walk-through of HPHT and CVD diamond growth — and what it means for the stone in your next commission.
Every diamond — lab-grown or mined — is simply carbon, arranged in a specific crystal lattice under intense heat and pressure. The only real difference is where that process happens: deep within the earth over a billion years, or inside a controlled laboratory over a matter of weeks.
Two Methods, One Result
Lab-grown diamonds are created using one of two established methods. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) replicates the earth's natural diamond-forming conditions using specialized presses. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) grows a diamond crystal from a carbon-rich gas inside a vacuum chamber, layer by layer, onto a small diamond seed.
Why the Distinction Matters
Because the crystal structure is identical, a lab-grown diamond has the same hardness, brilliance, and fire as its mined counterpart. What changes is the story behind it — a traceable, controlled origin rather than an extractive one. That's a meaningful distinction for many of our clients, and part of why AAPRO offers both options with full transparency.
From Rough Stone to Your Ring
Once grown, the rough diamond is cut and polished by skilled lapidaries, then independently graded by IGI or GIA on the same 4Cs used for any diamond. Only after certification does a stone make its way to an AAPRO design table, where it's set into the piece you've designed together with our team.
